Five Tips for Stress-Free Summer Travel

vacationLife is stressful – vacations shouldn’t be. Experts from Travelocity have identified five common travel problems and easy solutions for travelers. Whether it’s a last-minute getaway or a long vacation, proper planning is the key to a stress-free trip. Travelocity’s senior editor Genevieve Shaw Brown has solutions to the most common vacation stressors.

“Travelers can take the stress out of trips before they even leave their house if they follow a few simple tips. You don’t have to be an expert, but you can travel like one if you plan ahead,” said Brown.

Travelocity’s Stress-Free Summer Travel Tips:

Vacation Stressor: Missed flights will delay the trip

Solution:

  • Check in online before flights. Every major airline allows travelers to check in on their web site up to 24 hours in advance. This will save time typically spent in lines at the airport. Also, families should choose this option so they can select seats together.
  • Use the correct lane at security. Nearly every airport security checkpoint in the country has family, casual traveler, and expert lanes. Families that need a little more time to have their liquids checked and get the kids and stroller through the metal detectors will not feel pressured by expert travelers behind them. Expert travelers who are familiar with the rules can breeze though their lanes.

Vacation Stressor: Terrible weather will ruin vacations

Solution:

  • It is hurricane season, so choosing a destination with a weather guarantee is a smart move. Some hotels and resorts will issue a credit for a later date if a hurricane interrupts a trip or prevents travelers from taking it.
  • If a hurricane or similar major weather event affects a destination, most airlines will waive change fees and allow travelers to reschedule for a later date.

Vacation Stressor: Luggage will get lost or items will be stolen

Solution:

  • Ship luggage ahead of time through companies like The Luggage Club and have luggage (including skis, golf clubs, baby strollers, bikes, surfboards and bags) picked up at home and dropped off at the vacation destination.
  • Use a TSA-approved lock to protect belongings. Wordlock is one TSA-approved lock that allows travelers to secure belongings with a word combination instead of numbers – easier to remember and the TSA will not have to cut the lock should they need to inspect the bags.

Vacation Stressor: Booking a vacation too early and then finding a better deal

Solution:

  • Choose travel companies that have some sort of price-protection plan. For example, Travelocity’s PriceGuardian program automatically refunds up to $500 if someone else books the same Flight+Hotel vacation on Travelocity for a lower price.

Vacation Stressor: Unexpected unemployment could make a trip too expensive and force travelers to cancel

Solution:

  • Choose an airline or destination with a job-loss refund guarantee. For example, JetBlue’s ‘Promise Program’ gives refunds on tickets if the traveler experiences involuntary job loss before the trip.
  • Choose a trip protection plan that specifically covers job loss. Not all trip protection plans cover all situations, so choosing the right one is key to protecting your vacation investment.

Make Dinner Reservations from Your Palm Pre

palmOpenTable today announced that it has launched an application for the Palm Pre. Making it easier than ever for people to find and book reservations on-the-go, OpenTable for the Palm webOS platform allows diners to check the availability of multiple restaurants in the area; read restaurant reviews; get the location of the restaurants; make free, confirmed reservations; invite friends to join them; and, then follow directions to the restaurant.

OpenTable’s second mobile application to date, OpenTable for Palm webOS, includes several new features, like the ability to view comments about particular restaurants from actual diners. The application takes advantage of the unique capabilities of Palm webOS, allowing OpenTable users to integrate their reservations into the phone’s calendar and even modify reservations if plans change.

“The ability to find and book available tables at nearby restaurants, and read reviews before booking – all from your mobile device – is an incredible time-saver,” said Caroline Potter, chief dining officer at OpenTable. “After a long day at work, a late meeting, or drinks with friends, diners can use OpenTable for Palm webOS to quickly find and confirm an available table at a nearby restaurant—without having to make calls to multiple restaurants or wait on hold.”

Diners simply specify the desired date, time and party size, and they are immediately provided with a list of available tables at restaurants in the vicinity. They can also view results on a map, get directions to the restaurants, and send emails complete with reservation information to friends. With OpenTable for Palm webOS, registered OpenTable members can see their upcoming reservations, earn OpenTable Dining Points and view their current points balances. OpenTable for Palm webOS users can also book 1000-Point reservations with their mobile phones, allowing them to earn free meals faster than ever before.

Summer Barbecue Pests

bbqAlthough summer barbecues are as popular as ever, these outdoor events frequently find unwanted guests in attendance – summer pests. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) warns homeowners that these “nuisance” pests can in fact pose serious threats to the health of your guests.

The May 2009 issue of Fast Company examined the popularity of summer barbecues in the United States, finding:

  • More than 74 million American barbecued in 2007-2008
  • 74% of Americans will host a barbecue to celebrate the upcoming Labor Day holiday.
  • In the summer alone, the average American grill owner spends 4.4 hours barbecuing each week.

“So often, homeowners forget that moving festivities with food and drink outdoors can bring pests to the party,” said Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for NPMA. “Ants, yellowjackets and mosquitoes are all attracted to the sweets of barbecue, and subsequently to those enjoying such fare. These pests should never be allowed to join the festivities as ants can contaminate food, stinging insects send more than half million people to the emergency room each year and mosquitoes can transmit West Nile Virus.”

NPMA offers these tips to help homeowners keep summer pests from disrupting outdoor summer festivities:

  • Plan to serve food and beverages indoors, and reserve outdoor space for eating and entertaining.
  • Keep food sealed in containers whenever possible, and wipe tabletops frequently.
  • Bring utensils and dishware indoors shortly after the meal.
  • Rinse all beverage bottles and cans, and dispose of them in tightly closed garbage containers.
  • Remove or drain sources of standing water in your yard that could be a breeding ground for mosquitoes, including birdbaths, wading pools or garden ponds.
  • Ensure all doors and windows in your home have mesh screens that are in good condition.

Celebrate National Cheesecake Day on July 30 with 50% Off at the Cheesecake Factory

cheesecakeWith more than 30 decadent cheesecakes on the menu, The Cheesecake Factory is the perfect place to raise a fork in honor of America’s favorite dessert – cheesecake! In celebration of National Cheesecake Day, The Cheesecake Factory invites guests who dine in at any of its 146 restaurants on July 30 to enjoy any slice of cheesecake for half price. The restaurant will also debut Stefanie’s Ultimate Red Velvet Cake Cheesecake, which supports Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief charity.

On July 30, dine in guests will be the first to experience Stefanie’s Ultimate Red Velvet Cake Cheesecake, featuring moist layers of Red Velvet Cake and Original cheesecake covered with special Cheesecake Factory cream cheese frosting. The idea for this new cheesecake originated with Redondo Beach, Calif., resident Stefanie Gaxiola, whose flavor suggestion was chosen from nearly 10,000 submissions in The Cheesecake Factory’s “What’s Your Flavor?” cheesecake contest earlier this year. The winner of the contest was given the opportunity to have their cheesecake creation named after them and included on the menu for one year. This represents the first time The Cheesecake Factory has named a menu item after one of its guests.

“Our famous cheesecake made with my Mother’s recipe was the secret that inspired our restaurant more than 30 years ago and we’re delighted that it has become America’s favorite today,” said David Overton, Founder of The Cheesecake Factory. “As we celebrate National Cheesecake Day on July 30, we are inviting our dine in guests to celebrate with us by offering any slice for half price; we are thrilled to honor Stefanie by naming a cheesecake after her and making it the centerpiece of our ongoing commitment to Feeding America.”

With the introduction of Stefanie’s Ultimate Red Velvet Cake Cheesecake, The Cheesecake Factory is strengthening its partnership with Feeding America by donating 25 cents for each slice sold over the next year. Feeding America is the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization that helps to feed more than 25 million hungry Americans each year. During the past year, The Cheesecake Factory has donated more than $400,000 to Feeding America and hopes to surpass that donation in the coming year.

Art Education is Part of the Package at InterContinental Chicago O’Hare

chicagoThe new InterContinental Chicago O’Hare hotel is offering an artistic experience for all who walk through its doors and work within them, most recently by announcing the unveiling of a gallery strictly for employees. The display, created to show appreciation for hotel employees, showcases pieces by Helmut Horn, innovative photography artist and lifelong hotelier.

Horn created an artistic, colorful and emotional set of prints using a method of painting Polaroid photographs before their chemicals dry. The images on display at the InterContinental Chicago O’Hare depict ‘Barrio,’ an old section of Tucson, Arizona, which was originally occupied almost exclusively by migrant workers. This display of Ciba chrome enlargements consists of original, one-of-a-kind images that cannot be recreated.

“At the InterContinental Chicago O’Hare, we offer an experience that extends beyond our guests’ stays,” explained David Hall, General Manager, InterContinental Chicago O’Hare hotel. “We employ an eclectic, cultured staff and are happy to reward them with this wonderful exhibit from Helmut Horn.”

Hall’s passion for art motivates an ambiance of culture at the InterContinental Chicago O’Hare, which extends to the staff it employs. Melissa Smith pursued a formal training in art and design prior to joining the hotel as an Instant Service Operator. She was drawn to the position by the possibility of working among artwork in a formal gallery. Smith often leads art tours for guests with Christopher Pines, a Front Desk Agent for the InterContinental Chicago O’Hare. Pines holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts from the University of New Orleans, where he specialized in studio painting.

From comedic theater and music to photography and architecture, the InterContinental Chicago O’Hare embraces all things artistic. The hotel houses a working art gallery cared for by two professional curators. Over 1,600 pieces of artwork – most of which are available for purchase – are on display throughout the hotel. In June 2009, the InterContinental Chicago O’Hare completed the expansion of its “Artists Wing,” a hall of meeting and event space that showcases hanging sculptures, which act as light fixtures, and work by artists such as Lois Main Templeton, Tom Casalini and Martina Nehrling.

A stay at the new InterContinental Chicago O’Hare includes a complimentary education in art. Employees and guests alike are invited to immerse themselves in the artistic ambiance the hotel provides and are encouraged to roam the hotel and admire the unique art displayed. For information about the InterContinental Chicago O’Hare, please visit www.icohare.com.

Tips for an Affordable Family Vacation

familyWith the recent increase in gas prices, the question remains whether families can still take an affordable family vacation. Travel expert and blogger Amy Graff tackled that topic on her recent road trip down the “Great River Road” with her husband and two children, and she shared all the details in her blog onthegowithamy.com.

Her verdict? An affordable getaway is within every family’s grasp if they’re flexible and plan ahead. Amy and her family successfully met their budget goal of $150 a day.

“Savings aren’t spontaneous,” said Amy Graff, travel expert for Best Western International. “A lot of planning went into making this trip work within our means. Before I even finalized the trip, I made sure that all the hotels along our route would cost $100 or less a night—and then I made our reservations.”

Amy and her family traced the Mississippi River, from the headwaters in Minnesota to the mouth in New Orleans in a hybrid Mercury Mariner, which allowed them to save more than $120 in fuel throughout the two-and-a-half week journey. But this isn’t the only way the family of four saved on the road. Amy says they cut costs in three key areas: food, lodging, and fuel.

FOOD
1. Follow the locals. When it comes to saving on food, there is no faster way to burn a hole in your pocket than by dining at tourist traps. Instead, chat with locals about their favorite watering holes, and enjoy a true example of the local flavor. RoadFood.com and Chow.com also provide great recommendations.
2. Water – good for the body and the wallet. One of easiest ways to cut back on food costs is by ordering water at restaurants—that means no iced teas for mom or apple juice for the kids. Another tip: purchase eco-friendly metal canteens before hitting the road and refill them along the way. A family of four can easily spend $20 a day on bottled water.
3. Saving = sharing. Teaching kids to compromise and share isn’t always the easiest task. Why not start on the road? Amy and her family often split entrees and shared dessert and everyone left full.
LODGING
1. Be loyal. One way that Amy and her family met their budget was by signing up with Best Western’s loyalty program and taking advantage of its Summer Promotion that rewards travelers who complete two separate stays at its hotels by August 16, 2009, a free room night voucher. Staying true with one brand always pays off.
2. Soak up the free entertainment. Swimming pools offer some of the best entertainment for kids and time for parents to relax. And the best part is that they’re free! Be sure to double check that your hotel offers one. It’s one place where you won’t spend a dime.
3. Look for value. Seek out accommodations that offer free breakfast, free parking and free Internet, among other amenities important to a great stay. Breakfast for a family of four alone can easily equal $30 a day.
FUEL
1. Pack light. Extra weight cuts fuel economy so pack light. Carrying 100 pounds in the trunk reduces a typical car’s fuel efficiency by one to two percent. If you have cargo to haul, stick it in the trunk instead of the roof rack, as using these can decrease mileage by as much as five percent, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).
2. Get a tune up. A dirty air filter can reduce mileage by up to 10 percent and you can improve your gas mileage by around three percent by keeping tires inflated to the proper pressure.
3. Plan ahead. With some careful planning, road trippers can decrease their gas budget by using AAA’s fuel cost calculator to determine how much gas will be needed for the trip and GasBuddy.com can help to find the cheapest price on the route.
