Villagio alone has over 130,000 square metres of retail space – which will include a cinema (with 3-d screens), ice-skating rink and even an roller-coaster.

But Doha offers far more than luxury shopping malls. Souq Waqif is a huge sprawling traditional Arab Souq – traditional in style at least, the actual buildings have all been rebuilt. Here you can find colourful arrays of spices, Indian clothing, falcons and much more.

If you prefer something more basic you can head out to the wholesale markets on the outskirts of towns. In addition to the superb vegetable market, a live animal market (be sure to check out the camels) and a fish market you can also find the Omani market.

Here you can buy traditional pottery, huge dried fish and even – in wet winters – desert truffles.

The only thing to remember when booking a visit to Qatar is the weather. Don’t go in the summer. Otherwise the inside of those luxurious (and air-conditioned) shopping malls is the only thing you’ll be going to see.

History

Thanksgiving is one of the oldest festivals celebrated throughout history. We have learnt of ancient tribes making offerings and preparing feasts to thank their gods and seek their favor. In ancient times, the Greeks, the Romans and the Jews too had similar festivals to appease their gods and goddesses of harvest. It is believed that in the United States, Thanksgiving was originally a harvest festival held by the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony in 1621. During the first Thanksgiving, the pilgrims held a three-day feast in celebration of their bountiful harvest following their arrival in North America.

Although George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789, president Thomas Jefferson later dismissed the idea of having a national holiday of Thanksgiving. However, in 1863, president Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a national day of Thanksgiving. Finally, in November 1941, Thanksgiving was specifically sanctioned by a joint resolution of Congress as the fourth Thursday of November.

Things have changed a lot since the first Pilgrim harvest feast of 1621. Items in the first Thanksgiving meal were believed to be wheat, corn, barley, peas, wild fowl (ducks, geese, swans or wild turkey), fish (bass and cod) and five deer brought by the Native Americans. This tradition continues even today in the form of the Thanksgiving dinner, in which people eat turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn in some form or other and different vegetables and side dishes. Air travel is expensive. But I’m not telling you something you don’t already know. There are many ways to save money on air travel some of them will save you a little, some will save you a lot. Before you book your next trip, see if any of these money savings tips are options for you.

Consider flying out of another airport. Sometimes the nearest airport does not have the best rates. Checking the rates at one or two of the next nearest airports may yield better airfare rates than the airport that is closest to you. It may be worth it to travel an extra hour to the airport to save hundreds of dollars.

If you have a trip planned for the future, but you aren’t ready to order your tickets yet, sign up for e-mail alerts from all of the airlines that fly from the airport(s) near you to your destination. You never know when an airline may be running a special to your exact destination.

If you are ready to order your tickets, order them as far in advance as possible. The cheapest airfares sell out quickly. The closer to the flight you buy your tickets; the more expensive the tickets are likely to be. This is especially true around the holidays.
