Two Killed, Over 100 Injured As Police Clash With Apparel Workers In Bangladesh
Siddique Islam – AHN Correspondent Dhaka, Bangladesh (AHN) – At least two people were killed and over 100 injured in a clash between apparel workers and police in Gazipur district, about 23 miles north of the capital, Dhaka on Saturday. Local police confirmed on Saturday night that two bodies were recovered; one was identified as Babul Sheikh, 30, a rickshaw van puller, whose wife Roksana works at the factory, the other could not be identified immediately. According to witnesses the trouble began as authorities shut down the Nippon Garment Factory, a local apparel factory, until November 29 without paying three months’ arrears of the workers on the pretext that the factory has been hit hard by the global economic recession. The mostly female workers then clashed with police personnel as they tried to enter the factory on Saturday morning. A police spokesman confirmed reports and said the incident erupted because of the sudden closure of the factory. He said the workers forcefully entered the factory and started hurling brickbats at the police. Law enforcement opened fired on the workers to save protect themselves, he added.
