Head Of Principal Kidnapped By Abu Sayaff Guerillas Found At Philippine Gas Station
Ayinde O. Chase – AHN Editor Manila, Philippine (AHN) – The head of a kidnapped state school principal was found by military officials early Monday morning at a gas station on Monday. According to a military spokesman, the head of Gabriel Canizares, 36, was identified in Jolo town on Jolo Island, about 600 miles south of Manila. Published reports said two motorcycle-riding gunmen, believed to be Abu Sayyaf rebels, allegedly threw a plastic bag containing the victim’s head in front of the petrol station. Investigators are still trying to locate the body of Canizares, who was taken captive by nearly a dozen Abu Sayyaf guerrillas in Patikul town while traveling on a passenger minibus. Canizares was the principal of Kanague Elementary School. After guerrillas kidnapped the educator, they issued a ransom request for 2 million pesos ($42,000). However, Sulu province Gov. Sakur Tan refused to pay the ransom, urging the kidnappers to release the victims. Despite a greater military presence and an increase in military operations against Abu Sayyaf, guerrillas have continued their targeted terror practices against the region’s population. The group has conducted numerous high-profile kidnappings in the southern region of the country. This past July the last of three International Red Cross volunteers seized by the guerrillas on Jolo in January was released. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Monday told military and local police to shift their rescue efforts into punitive actions against Abu Sayyaf. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved
