Do German luxury cars (Audi, BMW, Mercedes) really need premium fuel? I want to buy one of their near-luxury cars (3 series), but with gas being so high, I don’t want to fill it with premium fuel if I don’t need to.

Why Do Luxury Cars Have A Smaller Wheelgap Than Economy Cars?
I noticed that the wheelgap of economy cars are rather large.. about 4inches or so. But if you look at some benzs, bmws, lexus; they have virtually no wheelgap. I hate the wheelgap on my car and am forced to buy coilovers to make it look right. Why dont economy cars come with a nice drop like luxury brands do? Is there a specific cost-related reason?
