Shannon McGregor – AHN Special Categories Editor Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (BANG) – Madonna is setting up a new Brazilian childrens’ charity. The ‘Celebration’ singer met with wealthy business people and politicians during her recent five-day trip to the South American country and managed to secure a $7 million donation for Success for Kids from Brazil’s richest man, Eike Batista. Madonna was invited to the father-of-two’s estate on the island of Angra Dos Reis on Saturday to discuss the project after Batista agreed to fund a large proportion of her latest charitable venture. During dinner, Batista – who has an estimated $7.5 billion fortune – offered to give Madonna $7 million after asking how much more she needed to set up her charity’s initial projects, leaving the pop superstar in tears. At the meal, Madonna declared her love for the country, saying: “I worship Brazil.” During her trip to Brazil, Madonna was accompanied by her rabbi. Despite speculation her visit to Rio de Janeiro was to meet her Brazilian boyfriend Jesus Luz’s family, she insisted she was there to carry out humanitarian work. Speaking ahead of her visit, she said: “I am going there strictly for fundraising and humanitarian purposes.” Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved

Foreign Correspondents Upset Over Not Being Allowed To Cover Dalai Lama’s Visit To India

Nilanjana Bhowmick – AHN India Correspondent New Delhi, India (AHN) – Foreign correspondents in India are upset over India’s refusal to allow them to cover Dalai Lama’s visit to the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh. The government informed foreign correspondents, who had applied for a special permission to travel to Arunachal Pradesh, that they will not be allowed to enter the state while the Dalai Lama is visiting. The Dalai Lama will begin a five day visit to Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday. This recent move of the government is being looked upon as an attempt to please China by not allowing extensive coverage of the visit. China claims virtually the whole of Arunachal Pradesh as its territory. India on the other hand, treats it as an integral part of the country. Steven Herman, South Asia Bureau Chief of Voice of America News says it will achieve just the opposite. “This controversy has generated more interest in the visit. If they have been trying to keep the coverage low, now they have given the event more publicity,” he said. Herman said he had put in his application for the special permission with the state of Arunachal Pradesh, which was then sent to the Ministry of External Affairs. After numerous phone calls, he learned that he will not be granted the permission to cover the visit. “It’s forcing us to cover the visit on second hand material,” Herman said. The Foreign Correspondents Club (FCC) released a statement criticizing the government’s stand. Heather Timmons from the New York Times and president of the FCC says, “Despite numerous requests over the past few weeks, India’s central government has not granted a single foreign journalist a permit to travel to the state of Arunachal Pradesh during the Dalai Lama’s visit. Today we were surprised and disappointed to learn that permits issued by the state government to travel to Arunachal Pradesh during the visit were canceled by the central government.” The visit has already generated much controversy, with China accusing the Dalai of trying to damage Indo-China bilateral ties. Meanwhile, United States Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs Maria Otero told journalists in New Delhi that the Dalai Lama is a religious leader and he cannot be stopped from traveling to carry out the role. Visit Your ‘sister City’ for Economical Traveling

November 5, 2009 by Allison Davis

What is a ‘sister city’ and how can you travel to one on a budget?

A number of cities all over the globe have adopted a sister city in another part of the world to promote greater understanding, among other things, between the two cities and their nations. The sister city ‘movement’ began at the end of World War II and was instigated by America.

Participating cities aim to develop friendships and foster relationships between their chosen sister cities (some cities have more than one sister) and to encourage peace and understanding between nations. This is done in a number of ways – encouraging business and economic relationships through trade and technology, stimulate cultural and creative networks, develop partnerships between cities and countries and to provide the opportunity for sister city citizens to experience other cultures through travel.

Traveling to your sister city may be something you wish to do and it can be done at relatively low cost if you are able to become part of an exchange program. Cultural exchanges between sister cities are generally paid for by your home town. Some cities select students to travel to their sister city for a period of time, (it could be weeks or months) and pay all expenses. If you are a student, investigate what opportunities are available for this type of travel.

Traveling to a sister city is not only for students. Other residents may participate in the program as well. You may be selected as an ambassador of your town to travel to the sister city and take part in projects fostered by the sister cities. You will then likely to be asked to host visitors from the sister city when they travel to your country. If you are able to get on one of these exchange programs you can expect accommodation and food to be taken care of (you will probably be living with a sister city family) but you may have to get involved in fundraising for your trip.

If you think this sounds like a fun (and cheap) way to travel, visit your town’s web site and find out about their sister city program. You’ll need to become a member and join in the volunteer program to help with fundraising. You could be asked to host visitors from your sister city and you may get the opportunity to travel. Becoming involved in the sister city program means becoming a part of creating community links and learning about other cultures – exactly what traveling is all about. You may even have ideas for your community’s sister city program and how it can further foster its global sisters’ relationships.
